5 Things to Expect When Getting a New Pet

Whether you are a long term dog lover, or have been hiding your inner cat lady for what seems like an eternity, congratulations on finally deciding to add a furry friend to your home.

Adding new pet to your family is honestly a big deal; and I know it myself (speaking from experience here!). After all, pets are companions that require a lot of care, love and attention. So before you get yourself that puppy/kitten from the pet shop, read on to find out what's in it for you.

1. You Will Focus on Training for a While

With your new pet in tow, you would possibly find yourself taking a lot of time - trying to get your furry friend to understand the rules of the house (No peeing, No pooping, No scratching, and so on). After all, animals and humans get along differently and it may be difficult to get your pet to follow your rules.

For this period, be sure to be patient while exercising a certain level of authority. That does NOT mean that it's okay to shout at your pets. What I meant was to be assertive and to "follow through" with your training and commands. Teach, Reinforce, Repeat.

2. Cleaning Up, Washing, and Feeding

From the moment your adorable furry friend enters the house, you'll find that there's a lot more to do within a short period of time. If your pet haven't been house or potty trained, you might find yourself cleaning after it relatively often,

My advise would be for you to stock up on potty pads, or pick up a litter box and a big bag of litter. With all the essentials on hand, you’ll be able to enjoy those first moments together instead of worrying about everything you need to buy.

There are many obvious advantages for using potty pads:
  • Soft and comfortable for your pet
  • Cleanup is easy
  • They’re convenient for potty training
  • Suitable for dogs who can’t go outside for health reasons

3. Your Pet May Take a While to Settle in

Be patient. It may take some time for your new furry friend to get used to the new environment that he has been placed in. It's totally normal if your pet takes time to warm up to you. It’s super important to be patient and gentle; you might also want to set a routine that you both can follow and depend on. That means walking and feeding your pet at fixed times, so he can become comfortable with your schedule!

4. You May Have to Pet Proof Your Home

You may have to consider pet proofing your home, or even using a pet gate to keep your pet safe. Things that could be toxic for your pets - such as chocolates, chemicals, little toys, or alcohol - be sure to keep them out of reach. Treat your new furry friend as your child, and you will be sure on what to do!

5. Ultimately, You'll Have a Lot of Fun

By spending time with your pet (which is actually the most important thing), you are fostering and building a stronger bond. Trust between the owner and the pet is the most important in any human-pet relationship and it will ensure happy and healthy interactions between the both of you.
